Douwe Dabbert is a Dutch comic series about a dwarf with a magical knapsack . The comic was created by artist Piet Wijn (1929-2010) and screenwriter Thom Roep (1952).
Douwe Dabbert experiences all kinds of strange adventures, often with supernatural beings. He has a magic knapsack with which he can save himself from the most perilous of positions because there are almost always things in it that will help him out if needed. If not, that means there is another solution.
It is not always clear in which historical period the stories are set. In most stories it seems to be the 17th or 18th century , but sometimes also the Middle Ages (as in Florijn de flierefluiter ).
In a number of stories, Douwe Dabbert has to deal with fairytale characters such as witches and wizards . Then again a story contains some more realistic elements, such as the West India Company (which appears in The Road to West and The Sea to the South).
